Getting Through the Holidays Alone: How To, the Queer Way
For some of us gays, this year has been quite a challenge. Is it us, or has there been more than a fair share of loss? We have so many in our friendship circle who have lost their parents or friends. While we love the holidays - the sexy Santas, the music, the food, the decorations, the naughty office parties - there are some of us who will be spending the holidays alone. But you know the queer community, we can still make it fabulous. We are taking a little moment and offering our tips and getting through the holidays alone. We got you!
Reach Out!
Use the holidays as an excuse to reach out to friends you haven't seen or chatted with for a while. Forgot about the one friend you used to have at work? Haven't talked to your college friends in a hot minute? Haven't talked to that crazy cousin you used to smoke pot with at Thanksgiving? Now is the time to send a text, make a call, or even set a coffee/cocktail date.

Enjoy the Solitude
There can be joy in finding some quiet time alone. Don't have anywhere to go on Christmas? Order in some food from your naughty list, pour a glass (or bottle) of wine, hunker down in your coziest pajamas, and don't do anything but catch up on bad TV all day or read that book that has dust on it. Turn on some music and get in the bathtub. Don't go to the gym, don't clean, don't send emails, just hunker down and do nothing and love doing it. Spend that quiet time to yourself.
Last Minute
Feeling like a last-minute get-together? Put the word out and invite anyone who doesn't have a place to go. Have everyone bring a bottle of something, or a plate of something, and make it a super casual get-together. You don't need to throw a fancy party or cater anything. Make it just a simple gathering for holiday orphans.
Date for One
You don't need anyone else to go out and enjoy a day out for the holidays. Take yourself to the movies, take yourself to a nice dinner, shop for yourself at any stores that might be open, drive around to look at the Christmas lights, head out to any gay bars that are open, treat yourself to whatever you want to do.
Hookup!
Ok, believe it or not, gay hookup apps are plenty busy during the holidays. There is plenty of fresh meat on the apps because a lot of guys are visiting family. Can you host? Even better! Many of these visiting gays can't host because they are staying with family. Have yourself a Merry little orgy! Put the hoe in ho ho ho!

Volunteer
A really feel-good thing you can do for yourself while being alone during the holidays is to go volunteer at a homeless shelter or food bank. Even driving around for Meals On Wheels can be very rewarding. Not only are you helping others, but chances are you will be volunteering alongside other good people and you will have a nice circle of folks to be around.

There is no right or wrong when spending the holidays alone. There's a stigma and assumptions made towards those who spend the holidays solo, but that is not the case. It can be a really great day or two to just be you without rules or noise. Enjoy!
