Movie News: More Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Star Trek, & Disney!

I'm your Gay News Guy – this is the news, casual, sassy, unfiltered, and a little hungover. Ok here’s this week's movie news as I see it!

Sorry John Wick fans, it doesn’t seem like there is going to be another movie anytime soon. After a successful John Wick 4, rumors emerged that a John Wick 5 would soon be on the way. Although Keanu Reeves and the director said they would be interested, it would only happen if a good script or idea made sense to bring back the franchise, but as of now, it is not happening.

The MCU is finally getting back on track and Avengers: Doomsday has finally got its filming start date, Spring of 2025. Robert Downey Jr. is coming back, but as the movie’s villain, Dr. Doom. We know that everything was shaking up in Avengers: Endgame, so it will be interesting to see how they will return to the franchise and what other reboot casting they do. Will fans like all of the changes?

The trailer for Star Wars: Skeleton Crew has dropped. This will be streaming for TV and stars Jude Law. Not much has been revealed about the storyline, but it will capture the essence and style of 1980s Star Wars, specifically the TV movie The Battle for Endor. Let’s see how this show fares, the last TV show Acolyte was ripped to shreds by critics and fans.

Horror guru Mike Flanagan has been successful in bringing Stephen King’s works to the screen. Doctor Sleep was fantastic, and his upcoming The Life of Chuck is being very well received. News came out today that he will be making an 8-part series based on King’s book Carrie. The original Carrie film is iconic but missed a lot of stuff from the book, doing a longer series will allow a deeper dive into Carrie’s world. Mike is also working on a TV series based on King’s Dark Tower novels.

Star Trek: Section 31 is on the way! This is a spinoff of Star Trek: Discovery featuring Michelle Yeoh. It was originally going to be a TV series but is now being released as a full-feature TV movie. The film’s director says that the storylines are endless at this point, so movie sequels are a distinct possibility, depending on how well it does. Fans did not react too well to the trailer that was released, saying it seemed very un-Star Trek. The movie comes out on January 24th.

Werewolves are all the rage apparently. The trailer for Frank Grillo's Werewolves dropped and there’s a reboot of Universal’s The Wolf Man in development. Vampires had their time in the spotlight, now it’s time for the werewolves! Ryan Gosling was originally set to star in the movie but dropped out. The Wolf Man director (who also did The Invisible Man reboot) says he wants to work on Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde next.

Disney fans! Moana 2 will be released for Thanksgiving weekend and is projected to have a huge box office opening, potentially beating Wicked and Gladiator 2 for that holiday weekend.

In other Disney news, there is a Prince Charming movie in the works. Not much is known about the storyline but it will not have a tie-in to Cinderella. It will probably be a movie musical and will be directed by Paul King who also directed Paddington and Wonka. So he’s used to taking on fan favorites and making them fresh.

It’s been almost 25 years since we saw Christian Bale in underwear showing off his body in American Psycho. Well, the movie is getting a reboot! Oscar nominee Luca Guadagnino will direct. Wonder who will be cast to take over for Bale. Let’s just hope there’s still an underwear scene!

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is in development and now it has been revealed that there is even another Lord of the Rings live-action movie in development. It is also rumored that Ian McKellen will be making a return as Gandalf.

There is a Dirty Dancing sequel in development. The original came out in 1987, and there was a Dirty Dancing spinoff called Havana Nights that had nothing to do with the first movie. Jennifer Grey will be returning to star as well as producing. There’s still a lot of planning to be done, and Grey states that the creative elements still need to be locked in for it to move forward and that it has to be just right.
