Mpox Is A Global Public Health Emergency

Haven't we been through enough with Covid practically shutting the world down? Geez! Monkey Pox, now known by Mpox, is once again declared a global health emergency by the World Health Organization (WHO). This is the second time they've done this. In July of 2022, cases were so bad in Europe and the Americas that Mpox first earned it's emergency status. Now, with more than 450 cases spreading through Africa, it has once again a earned global public health emergency designation.

The WHO is working with African government and other health organizations to reinforce measures to curb the spread of the virus. This time around, there is a new strain of Mpox that is transmitted sexually. This is not just an African problem, as the quick spread can soon become a global issue. Just a few days ago, Pakistan reported its first Mpox case with a patient who was traveling from Saudi Arabia.

MPox has become quickly spread within the male gay and bisexual communities. This virus is spread by skin-to-skin contact with someone affected, or by breathing close to someone with Mpox. Does this mean a return of face masks? The virus can manifest itself in rashes or bumps, fever, and other flu-like symptoms. Right now, there is no specific treatment for Mpox. For those with uncompromised immune systems, pain control will get an infected patient through it without further medical needs. If a patient has immune issues or a skin disease like eczema, it can actually be life-threatening. Those with HIV are at an extreme risk.

The number one recommendation where Mpox is considered is to be vaccinated. Vaccinations first came on the market when the initial global emergency was announced. Currently, there are two different vaccinations for Mpox avoidance - JYNNEOS and ACAM2000. Even if you are vaccinated, it is advised to avoid contact with those who are infected.

If you do get rashes/bumps from Mpox, you should not scratch or pick at the lesions, it may cause permanent scarring. Ointments like Vaseline or Aquaphor are recommended. After the lesions have healed, it is recommended to put sun tan lotion to prevent darkening of the skin.
