Queer Money Matters: Love & Money Stats

Even more dramatic than moving in with your significant other, even more dramatic than your first threesome with your beau, and even more dramatic than meeting his parents is...sharing your finances. There are plenty of couples who are married and still haven't opened up a joint checking account. While there are pros and cons to sharing your finances, it is a big step. Sometimes we aren't even honest with ourselves about finances. DatingNews.com did some research about love and money and we got the stats from their survey from people in relationships. Welcome to our first edition of Queer Money Matters!

Not surprisingly, 69% of those in relationships prefer to remain financially independent, saying it is a key to having a happy relationship. A quarter of those surveyed say that they have lied to their partner about their financial situation. Hey, who hasn't had a bankruptcy before applying for a new home? LOL. 12% have admitted that they have a secret credit card or bank account unbeknown to their partner. Gotta have that reserve account in case we have to skip town if our partner reads our Grindr messages!

35% of us have hidden a purchase from our loved ones. Does anyone know where we can hide a motorcycle? 1 in 10 of us say we don't feel comfortable talking about debt with our SO. We think this stat is low, but 1 in 5 say we are resentful of our partner spends their money. We think that might be higher. Our boyfriend looks good in his new Guccis, but hey, rent is due. LOL

Love that macho guy who lives life fast and loose? Well, you probably don't really want to date him. 63% say that someone's financial stability and money status affect who they date. We love that dom top in the bedroom, but we don't want to add them to our credit portfolio.

23% of us are having monthly fights about money. 1 in 10 of us have ended a relationship because of financial stuff. If our partner can spend $200 a month for a gym membership but get us a $10 birthday gift from Target, that may cause some upset. Speaking of which, the average person will spend up to $800 on their partner's birthday gift. $800??? Why are we dating the wrong guys? 50% of us are splitting rent or the mortgage evenly. What do you guys think if there are differing salaries? Should it be proportionate or just an even split?

For us singles out there, it may be surprising that 48% split the bill on dates. If that's true, then why are we always footing the bill? We don't mind if they are good in bed. LOL

How do you handle love and money?
