1 in 5 Gen Z Adults Identify as LGBTQ+

Are the queers taking over the planet? With all the political opposition happening to our community at the local State levels, maybe they are afraid we are getting too powerful. Well, bad news conservative lawmakers, we are growing!

According to new Gallup poll research, 7.6% of U.S. adults identify as something other than heterosexual. Gay, trans, lesbian, queer, etc, we are up! This compares to 3.5%  in 2012 when Gallup first started polling based on sexual orientation. The information was gathered from 12, 000 U.S. adults, 18 and over. 6.8% declined to provide their sexual identity info.

Bisexuality leads the pack with identity rates at 4.4% and more than half of LGBTQ adults reporting they identify as bi. Those that identify as queer pansexual or asexual are also on the rise.

Data also shows that the younger generation is freer and more likely to be open about their sexuality. These Gen Zers are now becoming adults and a vocal part of society. Ranging in age 18 to 26, they are more than twice as likely to identify as queer as compared to the generation before them. Again, bisexuality leads the Gen Z pack, with 15% of all Gen Z identifying as bi.

The study also found that women are two times as likely to identify as queer, especially in Generation Z and the millennial generation.

Gallup reports that it is likely that the proportion of LGBTQ+ identifiers will exceed 10% of U.S. adults at some point within the next thirty years. We are taking over!

HRC (Human Rights Campaign) shared the info in a statement and also revealed information supplied by the Public Religion Research Institute that shows that most Americans, even people of faith, support nondiscrimination protections for the LGBTQ community at a whopping 76%. 60% say that oppose service refusal based on religion, and 67% support gay marriage. Certain sections of the US have declined with their support of the queer community, no doubt at the encouragement of conservative groups. But overall, the US is still in support of our rights.

With a record number of anti-LGBTQ bills in process, it is interesting to see that the general public overall supports equal rights for our community. Will such support be enough for the elections this year? Time will tell. This is when we talk to our allies and talk about how imperative keeping equal rights for all is.
