Born in the Southern part of Germany, he began his entertainment career in the mid-90s as an actor, singer, dancer, public speaker, and TV host. Can you imagine seeing this stud on your TV on the regular? He came to New York in the early 2000s to continue his acting education. He completed at four-year program at NY's HB Studio then moved to Hollywood in 2006 to pursue his movie career. That didn't quite pan out...and selfishly we are grateful. In 2012, Hans Berlin was born and quickly became a fan favorite and an award-winning adult performer. In addition to giving us super hot scenes, he used his platform to educate us about safer-sex options and to break the HIV stigma. He created his own campaign, HANS HELPS, making him an internationally known HIV activist and fighter to spread the knowledge of #UequalsU. He has come out openly about his status, contracting the virus back in 2001, prior to his adult film career.

Just to add a splash of glitter and glamour, he wrote his first musical, Shooting Star — a semi-autobiographical love story dealing with the world of gay porn. The show has gone international, from LA to NY to London to Berlin and more cities on the way.

We caught up with this shooting star to have a chat and catch up, check it out:

What was your experience with gay culture growing up in Germany?

I'm old. I grew up in the '70s and '80s. First of all, when I was born, being a homosexual was still against the law (even in New York, it was not until 1980 that same-sex sexual activity between consenting adults was legalized). Therefore, being gay was just not ‘a thing’, and if it was portrayed on TV and in the movies, homosexuals were either the funny sidekicks or the creepy killers. Funny enough, without knowing it, I started listening to some of the gay cultural icons at an early age — I loved Barbra Streisand and Donna Summer and hated Bavarian Oompah music. Speaking of music and pop culture, on the other hand, in the '80s, a lot of the artists already played with what you now would call ‘gender-non-conforming.’ Back then, we just called it ‘androgynous’ — which was great for Queer artists to hide their true sexuality and just blend in (like Boy George).

You were a film/TV actor before getting into the adult industry, do you miss it?

No. I always hated the business of acting — audition after audition and so much rejection. I’m still an actor - just the kind of acting has changed a bit ;)

What made you make the shift to the adult industry?

When I lived in LA/Hollywood and worked on my acting career, I needed a ‘day job’ to pay my bills — like so many actors/writers/etc there. I started go-go dancing in West Hollywood at Micky’s and was asked a bunch of times if I wanted to do porn. I had never considered it, but after a few months and several offers, I realized that I don’t really have an acting career that would be destroyed by doing the X. Plus, I always loved sex, and why not get paid for something you really enjoy?!

What was filming your first porn scene like?

I was so nervous. But my scene partner was super hot and very sweet. I was topping, and a little blue pill helped. But we had to fake my cum shot as I just couldn’t cum on command...yet.

You have been in the industry for quite a while. How has the industry changed the most from your view?

How much time do you have?!? LOL. First of all, one of my biggest concerns back then in 2012 was do you guys film with someone who’s HIV+? The answer from the studios I worked with was yes, because we shot with condoms. In my first films (with TITAN), we also didn’t do anything ‘risky’ like a cum shot in the mouth. When science made it clear that the risk of getting HIV through semen in mouth is down to almost zero, the ‘cum eating’ began (Lucas Entertainment), but we still used condoms. With the dawn of PrEP (FDA-approved in 2012, it took until 2013/14 that the studios ‘believed’ in its power to prevent an HIV infection), everything changed. The condoms slowly disappeared and ‘bareback’ became the norm. I shot my first condomless scene in 2015 for Kristen Bjorn. Then in 2016, I heard a statement by the New York Health Department that people with HIV who have maintained an undetectable viral load for at least six months do not sexually transmit HIV - this is now known as “Undetectable = Untransmittable, or U=U (Knowledge that was published as the ’Swiss Statement’ in 2008; it took many years for the ’news’ to spread, and even now, is NOT a fact known by everyone). Now, being HIV+ doesn’t feel like a handicap anymore. After many years of keeping my status a secret (since 2001), I could finally talk about it openly and came out during the 2017 Grabby Awards in Chicago when we won a GRABBY for that Kristen Bjorn scene (best THREEWAY!).

In Germany, I’m the ‘poster boy’ for the ’Safer Sex 3.0’ campaign of the German AIDS Foundation (Condom, PrEP, Treatment as Prevention/ U=U).

What has also changed over the years is the way the industry makes money. When I started, most every movie that I shot was pressed on DVD (and I got a free copy). Now, most of the studio porn is for streaming only (I don’t even get free access to watch my own porn scenes) — and of course, OnlyFans! Now we performers can basically run our own porn studio, with an OnlyFans page, you’re in charge of production (who/ when/ where), distribution (how often do you release scenes) and promotion (social media). If you want to be successful, you have to treat it like a real job. It also shows we’re not ‘just' sex-craving zombies, we’re businessmen (and some of us are probably millionaires by now, like my hero Austin Wolf) At some point the market is oversaturated, which led to the closing or merging of several porn studios. Just like in real life, everything is always changing (one thing is for sure though — porn will never leave you).

Has the kind of porn you like filming changed?

YES. In the beginning, I was marketing myself as a versatile performer, shooting scenes both as a top and a bottom. Now that I’m 51 years old, I’m too old to top. I rather bottom for the young and fit ones. Topping is so much work, especially in porn (and I enjoy bottoming a lot more ;) )

You have filmed just about any scenario…is there any type of scene left that you’d like to do that you still haven’t filmed?

I would love to film one of those parody porn films, like STAR WHORES or THOROUGHLY BOTTOM BILLY.

We love your studio work AND your OnlyFans work! Which do you prefer? Or what do you like from both genres?

Studio porn: They take care of the booking, filming, promotion —I just show up, do a good job, and get paid instantly.

OnlyFans: I have to do everything, and it can take a while until you see the financial fruits of your ‘hard’ labor. BUT, one of the things I LOVE about shooting for my OF, I can choose the guys who I film with. We can have real fun together and film at our own speed. And it usually is over in an hour or so. I was on porn sets where it took 9 hours to shoot B-roll, take pictures, fuck, and cum. And I was exhausted!

You wrote a musical somewhat based on your life! How did audiences respond?

SHOOTING STAR - A Revealing New Musical is a semi-autobiographical tale of my experiences in porn. I wrote it with German composer Thomas Zaufke and New York lyricist Erik Ransom. We had several Broadway readings and two full productions, in LA (before the pandemic) and in New York (2022/23). I’m currently working on potential productions of SHOOTING STAR in London and Berlin, because the audiences responded really well — also thanks to the great music Thomas and Erik created, my amazing actors, directors, choreographers, and everyone else involved in making the show. I realized though that setting a show in the world of the gay adult film industry is a lot more challenging than I thought — we’re a musical love story that’s about finding yourself, finding love, and a chosen family. But the porn setting was too ‘risky’ for all the producers I met, so I produced it myself. I believe that London and Berlin will be more open and ‘understanding.’

Was it odd to see your life up on the stage, being sung?

A little. What was more ‘odd’ was seeing all the characters and situations I had in my head come to life on stage. I never thought I had it in me to write a full show. I had to start doing porn to find that out about myself!

How have you changed the most as a person since your time in the adult biz?

I'm a much happier person. At first, I thought of myself as a loser and sellout who couldn’t make it as an actor in Hollywood and ‘ended’ up in porn. Over the years, I realized that I actually succeeded as an entertainer and made all my Hollywood dreams come true — I wanted fame, fans, and a little fortune. And all of that happened. Just because it’s not as big as a Hollywood movie star doesn’t mean that they’re happier than me. Also, I figured out that I’m in one of the most honest professions in the world — we all have sex — we performers just do it in front of the camera. But we’re not harming anyone, even though the judgment society gives you as a sex worker makes you feel like a super-criminal sometimes. On the other hand, it also shows you how two-faced our world is. Sex sells everything. That’s okay. But if you actually ’sell’ sex, you’re a bad person. That’s crazy.
It doesn’t touch me anymore. I realized that whenever I meet new people and their expectations of me might be very low, I can always surprise them with the man I have become over the years. And I like that man. A lot!

What are you working on for the future that you are most excited about?

I just sold my first concept for a TV show to a major production company in Germany. I’m excited to see where that’s gonna go. I have many more stories in my head working on bringing them to ‘paper.’ I also just finished another “Hans Helps” tour through Germany where, in collaboration with the German AIDS Foundation, I talk about my life with HIV, educate about PrEP and U=U and break the HIV stigma. There’s still so much work to be done, and I want to branch out HANS HELPS to the USA. Plus, I’m not done with SHOOTING STAR - A Revealing New Musical yet, and like I said, the next stops are London and Berlin.

You are going to make an appearance at The Eagle NYC for our Fleshbot Award mixer. What do you love most about making personal appearances?

It’s just fun to meet your fans up close and personal, talk to them, and see what ‘happiness’ the work I do puts into their lives. Especially when I get offers like, “I’ve been watching your porn since I was a teen. Now I can finally fuck you!”

Do you ever end up taking any fans home with you?

Yes, yes, and yes.

What is your top tip for cruising at a club?

Get off Grindr. And make sure your ass is clean — lol.

Don’t trust anyone when it comes to your health (If I’m in the passenger seat, I just put on my safety belt, and don’t ask the driver about his driving record before - I hope that makes sense, lol.)
