Trailer Drops for Queer Horror Film “Summoning Sylvia,” Starring Michael Urie & Frankie Grande

In what I hope is a permanent trend, we have another Queer horror film coming out, and this one looks like an absolutely camp-filled blast! Last year brought us such hits as They/Them, The Huluween Dragstravaganza, and M3GAN, and this year is starting off strong with Summoning Sylvia starring Michael Urie (Shrinking AppleTV+), Travis Coles (David Makes Man), and Frankie Grande (Rock of Ages, Celebrity Big Brother).

The trailer shows us a gays' weekend away for Larry's (Travis Coles) bachelor weekend thrown by the friends of him and his fiancé Jamie (Urie). The two invite Jamie's breeder brother Harrison (Nicolas Logan, I Care A Lot) to join, which leads to a bumpy start to the festivities. He's gruff and covered in military fatigues, but something tells me we may love him by the end? TBD!

The group performs a seance together where they summon a ghost named Sylvia (Broadway icon Veanne Cox). Legend has it that Sylvia used to live in the house and supposedly killed her family and then herself. The legends say she slaughtered her son and buried him under the floorboards of the house.

I've been a big fan of Urie's Broadway career, so I'm thrilled he's having such great moments on the screen right now (if you haven't seen Single All the Way on Netflix, go stream that now, Christmas season or not). And I've been a big fan of Coles' since his performance in David Makes Man on OWN from Tarell Alvin McCraney, so I'm excited to see him with even more screen time. In addition to Coles, Grande, and Urie, the film also stars hot Broadway-turned-screen actors Troy Iwata (Dash & Lily), Noah Ricketts (American Gods), Camden Garcia (Station 19), and Sean Grandillo (Spring Awakening).

It makes sense there are so many familiar Broadway faces in this film since it's the handiwork of writer/director (and Broadway star in his own right) Wes Taylor. Wesley is making his directorial debut, along with co-creator Alex Wyse. Taylor is best known for his roles on Broadway (SpongeBob Squarepants: The Broadway Musical) and TV (SMASH). Together, he and Wyse previously created the popular gay TV series Indoor Boys and It Could be Worse.

Summoning Sylvia will be in theaters March 31st and then available to rent on-demand and on most major streaming services starting April 7th. Take a look at the trailer below and let us know what you think!
