Killing Construct Volume 7: The Monopoly on Morals vs The Persecuted Sex Worker

AMATEUR

They call us dumb. They say, we are dirty, & diseased. They block our pictures from Instagram and Facebook. They say we go against community guidelines. They claim it’s not a real job. They say we ruin relationships. We’re all addicted to drugs. They say we aren’t worthy of upper management corporate jobs. Instagram shadow bans us, even Twitter says we can’t have “illicit sexual profile photos.” The only site we have to do our work isn’t even based in the country because it's illegal to run it here, and even then we can’t post rates on it. They say we are immoral.

Then they hire us for sex, and go right back to their hypocrisy. We are escorts, and we are without a doubt the most abused professional industry that exists. I would try to find a scapegoat but unfortunately I’ll have to blame society as a whole for this one because there isn’t a group that is less discriminatory in this case.

It has become an unconscious bias that sex is dirty as taught by the heteronormative and Christian right wing at a young age. As we figure ourselves out later on in life, we know most of these constructs of morality are fabricated by shame or religion. We even learn in life sex isn’t dirty.

So why can’t we get over it?

Sex for money is as dirty as sex is; not dirty at all. It’s a job no better or worse than yours. Just because the idea of it is nasty to society and the threat of biological risk (if there is any) is not for us as a whole doesn’t mean there aren’t a piggy few that will roll up their sleeves and do the work. Engaging with a sexual professional has changed dramatically when it comes to mitigating risk. There’s doxy prep, truvada, dyscovy, and free STI tests everywhere now, not to mention undetectable people are untransmittable anyway.

So where’s the threat?

We are slowly leaving a toxic age of capitalism and monopolized morality by the Christian right, and they don’t want to release their power despite advances in sexual science. The right wing has painted themselves into a corner like the closeted Christian homos they are. If the government as a whole decided to release religion as a guide to morality in this country, then they would have to admit sex for money isn’t a crime and that most of them in fact do engage in it—because when it comes to it, even the most pious get lonely. I had one older gentleman hire me and one other and told us we were doing “God’s work.” Hypocritical and gross, but at least the tiny dicked ugly, likely republican man, was honest, in his own Catholic ways.

But there’s the threat to them…

Political careers established on the fact that there is only one morality in this country would fall apart when faced with the honest truth of who they are. But there isn’t only one set of rules for morality. The morality of a sex worker, an athiest, or of a catholic preist, change drastically person to person, but morality isn’t just based on religion, but laws as well. Just because religious practice says it's wrong doesn’t mean it is, or just because it’s against the law doesn’t mean it should be and that’s where the public confusion comes into play. So many of us still believe with unconscious bias that something about it is dirty so therefore it stays immoral, illegal, and nationally irreparable by society. And it keeps money in their grubby lil pockets to pay to us later when they feel like it.

As someone who has been in sex work since the age of 18 (yes 18!), I have borne the brunt of all the shady remarks. I think I speak for most of us when I say the social misunderstanding of sex workers and escorts leading lawmakers to keep it illegal has left us with a completely unsafe work environment for a profession that will never go away based on an archaic set of medival morals. When law as it currently is written leaves a sexworker alone to complete their work under the guise of the black market, no party is safe. What if there’s a dispute for payment, a gun, what if they were just lured there to be killed? And what if they’re an 18 year old kid with religiously and physically abusive parents with no choice? They paint the picture for us to be criminals for no reason so we are treated as such.

Sex workers are business men and women, entrepreneurs, they know what people like some of them have launched big businesses just from the profit of their earnings. They derserve our praise. Most of them I know are too busy to get fucked up on drugs and if they are likely it was due to a client request. Or didn’t you know that it’s the client that pays the escort to do meth with them so they don’t feel alone? Sex work may not have required the education most have to make it in the world for for the less privileged it’s a godsend, and quite frankly I’d say most of the educated are simply jealous that you can get a body from the gym for a fraction of the price of an education nowadays and be on an equal playing field with our PHD counterparts. Deal with it, you chose your path of struggle, but don’t project it on us because we seem like we don’t have a struggle ourselves. We grew up in the projects, while the privileged grew up on 5th avenue and I bet you wouldn’t trade lives for a second.

Face it, it is a real job.

Again the point is, the struggle is real for all of us and like it or not there are all kinds or sex workers, some are dumb and fucked up. While others just want to get through school and start their life. But every life is a struggle. The least we can do to lessen the divide of sex workers and social acceptance is to be kind and question your morals, maybe yours are what needs to change.
