The Movies We Are Most Excited About in 2025
Still riding on the Wicked movie wave, there are plenty of major films (including more Wicked) coming in 2025 that are bound to be major box office blockbusters or award-worthy titles. There are also some long-awaited sequels and interesting celebrity pairings that will be interesting to see how they do ticket-wise. In addition to the mainstream Hollywood fare, there are some great queer movies that are part of this year's roster. Here are the films we are most excited about.
Jurassic World Rebirth
Just like the Saw franchise, the Jurassic Park world just won't go away. The last few iterations haven't been all the mind-blowing, and what is going to be different about this one? Let us guess, dinosaurs run around rampant and try to eat people. This will be the second reboot after the Chris Pratt movies. Producers promise this to be a unique take on the story, so we shall see. What we are excited about is the casting of the sexy duo Jonathan Bailey and Scarlett Johansson.

Frankenstein
Legendary monsters will get their fair share of representation this year. Hot off the heels of Nosferatu, Frankenstein will be the latest take on the man-man monster story. We can't wait for this version. It is directed by Guillermo del Toro (we LOVE his movies) and ultra-hot Jacob Elordi as the Monster...let's hope there's a scene where they fit him for his man parts. It also stars Oscar Isaac as Dr. Victor Frankenstein. This is bound to be dark and magical.

How To Train Your Dragon
15 years after the original animated How to Train Your Dragon, Dreamworks will be releasing the live-action version. For those of us who love these movies, seeing the trailer before Wicked brought on all the warm, fuzzy feels. It looks very similar to the original film, but we hope there's some added substance to make it worth it.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps
This iteration of Fantastic Four promises to be much better than the ill-fated Chris Evans-led version. This is set in a stylized version of the '60s and stars our crush Pedro Pascal. This will be the original film before the cast appears in the two upcoming Avengers films.

Avatar: Fire and Ash
The long-awaited sequel to Avatar did very well at the box office. Avatar: Fire and Ash will be followed up by two more movies. That's a long way to go for this franchise. We know that James Cameron has been a leader in movie-making technology and storytelling, so it will be interesting to see where these films go. The original cast returns.

Ballerina
We love the John Wick movies. Beyond starring the hot actor-who-refuses-to-age Keanu Reeves, they are gripping, action-packed, and thoroughly entertaining. Over the years, the films have become fan favorites and the studio is releasing Ballerina, starring the gorgeous Ana De Armas Eve Macarro as a ballerina-assassin who trains in the traditions of the Ruska Roma and sets out to exact revenge for her father's death. The movie takes place between John Wick 3 and 4. If that wasn't gripping enough, Anjelica Huston (our favorite Morticia) also stars as the Director and Keanu Reeves will be reprising his role. Hot stuff!
Superman
Well, superhero movies aren't going anywhere. Superman is back again, under the watchful eye of James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy). Lex Luthor is the villain once again, so let's see how they make this version different and interesting. We shared some pics of the new Superman, David Corenswet, sporting some major bulge. He sure can fill out that spandex!

Lilo & Stitch
Just like How To Train Your Dragon, this is a direct remake of the animated version. Oh Disney, can you just leave some things alone? The Disney live-action remakes haven't all been that great, yet they continue. Lilo & Stitch is such a touching story, we can see how a live-action can do well. Let's keep our fingers crossed.
The Running Man
Stephen King adaptation movies are extremely hit-and-miss. This is one we can get excited about. Arnold Schwarzenegger starred in an, um, interesting version way back. This will be more true to the story and stars one of our favorite leading studs, Glen Powell. Let's hope there's plenty of skin-showing in this version.

Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning
It's hard to believe we have been watching Tom Cruise in the Mission: Impossible movies since 1996! Is the franchise finally coming to an end with this upcoming film? The movies have gotten more intense and darker. This may be the final film, but we know Hollywood and if this is a huge success there may be more on the way. Does Tom ever age?
Wicked: For Good
Do we need to say anything more about this sequel? Critics were concerned when it was announced Wicked was going to split between two movies, with the first one running longer than the entire Broadway show. Well, it worked. Will the magic continue for the sequel? The sequel will include more elements from the original Wizard of Oz story and will be darker, considering what happens.

Since Wicked was pretty queer, it is the perfect lead in to the ultra-queer movies that we are looking forward to this coming year.
Kiss of the Spiderwoman
For us musical theatre gays out there, we are very cautious about this. Kiss of the Spiderwoman is the musical movie based on the John Kander and Fred Ebb Broadway show of 1992 based on the 1976 novel by Manuel Puig. JLo leads the film as the Spiderwoman, played on stage by Chita Rivera and Vanessa Williams. JLo has suffered a bit of a fall from grace and her latest projects haven't done so well. Also, does she have the singing chops to handle the role? After the release of Wicked, all musical movies will be held to a higher standard. The film also stars one of our favorite cuties Diego Luna. The story revolves around two prisoners (one gay, one straight) in an Argentinian jail who form an unlikely friendship.

Jimpa
The film stars one of our absolute favorites, Olivia Colman. She plays the mother of a trans nonbinary teenager. The two visit Colman's estranged gay father and she must come to terms with her role as a mother, the past, and the changing family dynamic. The film also stars John Lithgow. Cue the awards talk!

The Wedding Banquet
This is a direct remake of the 1993 Ang Lee film. It is directed by Fire Island's Andrew Ahn and stars Bowen Yang and Lily Gladstone. It is a rom-com about fake marriages, sexual identity, and family dynamics.

On Swift Horses
Grab the Kleenex box, not for crying but for...well. Saltburn's Jacob Elordi is back for some more homo-erotic fare for this film. He plays the younger brother of a man whose wife is exploring her lesbian side. In turn, he explores his gay side with a co-worker. We can't wait for this film that promises to be quite steamy.

The Light Fantastic
Actor Rupert Everett paved the way for openly gay actors before it was chic. Did it stunt his career? He starred in mainstream films like My Best Friend's Wedding, An Ideal Husband, and with Madonna in The Next Best Thing. Well, he's back for this film, playing a dance instructor in the world of Blackpool’s professional ballroom dance.

Queens of the Dead
In this fun fare, Queens of the Dead is a queer take on the zombie films. It is created by none other than George Romero (Living Dead) offspring Tina Romero. This will be a tongue-in-cheek gory movie and includes Cheyenne Jackson and Margaret Cho.
