The Viral Memes of 2024 Wrap Up

Well, another year has come and gone and we certainly have had more than a fair share of viral memes in 2024. Looking back, some of these memes seem like a million years ago. We can only imagine how many viral moments we are going to have in 2025 under the new political administration. Sigh. Anywayyy...Happy New Year and here's a look back at what went viral this year!

Wicked Pussy

We all know that Wicked was a big hit in theaters. But before the movie even came out, memes went crazy concerning the color of Elphaba's junk. While it might have been funny to many, Wicked star Cynthia Erivo was more than displeased.

Holding Space

Another viral moment came out of Wicked when journalist Tracy E. Gilchrist interviewed Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo and talked about Defying Gravity and holding space. Holding space is to physically, emotionally, and mentally be present with something or someone. The meme world went crazy.

Drag Race

Plane Jane was the queen who uttered “Mama, kudos for saying that. For spilling" on this year's season of Drag Race. It barely hit the airwaves and then instantly became the subject of many memes.

Challengers

The Challengers movie caused quite a stir with its very graphic depiction of a threesome. We aren't complaining and it gave social media an opportunity to bring sexuality to the forefront. Threesomes can be fun!

Brat Girl Summer

That's so Brat! Charli XCX’s hit album, “Brat,” went viral. It became part of pop culture on all levels. Collins Dictionary even announced “brat” as its 2024 word of the year. Basically put, having a brat girl summer meant throwing all caution to the wind and being your most authentic, if chaotic, self.

Thailand's baby hippo Moo Deng became the star of many memes. Being adorably plump, like some of us after the holidays, caused some laughs and plenty of jokes.

Don't we love it when a queer celebrity takes center stage and advances LGBTQ representation? And then there's JoJo. Oy. She caused quite the stir this year with her "new look" and her statement that she was creating gay pop. WTF.

Movie popcorn buckets have certainly had their year. Now, in addition to paying $354 for your movie ticket, you can spend additional funds and take home a souvenir. Everyone shook their heads when the popcorn bucket for Dune 2 came out. It looks just like...well...you know.
