The Gays Are Flocking To Bluesky! Bye Bye, X!

There have been various stages of exodus from the queer community leaving X (Twitter). X has not been such a safe place for LGBTQ users and with the new administration coming in, we have no idea what Elon Musk has in store for the platform. When such an exodus happened before, many ran to Threads. Now, the consensus is, that we don't want to participate in any platform under Meta. So what's a gay to do? This last week saw social media post after social media post announcing users from the drag, adult, political, gaming, and etc communities joining Bluesky. It became among the top free apps in Apple.

Bluesky is not brand new. The platform has been around since 2022. Recently, the app hit a 19 million user landmark, and in one week gained over 700,000 users. Will this be our new mode of social media expression? Users had such hopes for Threads, but that excitement quickly fizzled away.

Bluesky was actually created by a former Twitter chief executive. It started out as an invite-only app but is now open to everyone. The platform resembles Twitter in look and application but has a few more bells and whistles that social media users have been looking for. Twitter users have complained about algorithms that don't fit their interests, an increase in hate speech, and bot ads that are totally inappropriate for a user's interests. When GLAAD released its report for social media platforms and their protection of the LGBTQ community, Twitter was at the very bottom. Apparently, not being able to support the actual needs of users has its impact. Since Musk has taken over Twitter, it has lost 80% of its value. Ouch!

For us who are fans of the adult community, Bluesky is letting everyone show off their goods. Twitter would randomly shut down adult content creators, many from the queer community, without warning or explanation. Will Bluesky be the new adult community's haven? As we know, many adult content creators rely on social media to promote their sites and OnlyFans.

There are still a few bugs to work out on Bluesky, as with any new app. And who knows if this will stick. What we do know is the platforms from mega apps like Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook prove over and over they do not cater to the needs of the queer community.
