Men's Health: How Much Should You Be Jerking Off?

I was having a conversation with my friend the other day, and he mentioned that he hadn't jerked off in over a month and that he just wasn't feeling sexual lately. I almost fell off the chair. This comes from someone who has to blow daily or things might just rise up at the most inopportune time. In addition to having uncontrollable boners, jerking off is fun! But just how many times is too much, and how much is too little? Are there rules? We did our digging and here's what we learned.

We breathed a sigh of relief when we learned that there were no health issues with jerking off daily, or even a few times a day. There are issues with constant masturbation that are a result of porn addiction or what's called chronic masturbation, where it is compulsive and excessive. If you are late to work, cancelling plans with friends, are spending all day in front of a computer having a pull, then you might have an issue. But frequent, regular bator sessions are perfectly fine and may offer other benefits other than having a good orgasm that can improve physical and mental health.

When you are aroused, your body naturally increases the oxytocin and dopamine hormones. This natural high can have many benefits. The pleasure hormone, or dopamine, can help with productivity, motivation, and mood levels. When you feel good, you want to do all kinds of things. So next time you want to procrastinate doing the laundry, try jerking off. LOL. Oxytocin helps reduce stress. Sounds like a win-win for me! Other studies have shown that regular ejaculation can help with lower blood pressure, better sleep, a reduction in migraines, improved immunity, and a reduction in heart disease. Why aren't more doctors recommending more jerking off?

There is something called the refractory period, and that is the time between feeling the urge or wanting to jerk off. With younger men, this can be reset in minutes or a few hours. For those of us who remember using our sock collection as a glove when we were younger, can attest that yes, a few minutes only were usually needed. The older you get, the harder it gets to shorten that time. So while you may want to jerk off more times in a day, it might not be possible. And it may affect your sex life if you have a date later in the day. There is the technique of masturbating a few hours before a big date night so you last longer in the bedroom.

In looking at different medical studies, there are some differing opinions as to whether regular jerking off can help reduce the risk of prostate cancer. A Harvard medical study started this conversation after their research showed that guys who masturbated 21 times in a month had a 31% less chance of developing prostate cancer as compared to men who only jerked off only 4 to 7 times. The Journal of the American Medical Association did not find this to be true in their research. Chinese researchers found that jerking off 2 to 4 times a week was sufficient in lowering risk, but more frequent orgasms did not decrease the risk any further.

There is the misconception that not jerking off can increase your strength or energy, or even your testosterone levels. There's the myth that athletes should avoid sex or jerking off prior to a big game so they perform better on the field. No research has been able to support this theory. Although the idea of a bunch of horny men in a locker room after the game who have abstained intrigues us.

Some guys just aren't into jerking off, like my friend I mentioned. Research has found that there are no major health risks in not cumming. Sperm cells that don't make their way out of the body can be reabsorbed or can even be released during sleeping. Wet dreams are not just for youth.

So in conclusion, jerk away or don't. Just don't let it rule your life, and it may improve your mental and physical health. But if you're not in the mood, don't force it. No excuse us while we get our lube and Kleenex, it's time.
