Be Careful on Grindr, This Man Just Pleaded Guilty to Extortion!

We like to poke fun at some of the crazy convos that are being had on Grindr, sometimes the dating world is brutal. And we've all been there, cute guy asks us to verify our dick size or bubble butt so we send a pic and expect one in return. We've all had those nude selfie sessions. But you really need to be careful out there to whom you are sending your nude pics too, especially if you don't want the world to see and double for those of you still in the closet. Grindr has already gotten into trouble for allegedly sharing private user information, but now a user has used the platform for personal extortion.

Last week, 28-year-old Omoruyi Uwadiae pleaded guilty in an Ohio court to using Grindr to demand money and sex from a total of 8 men. He was accused of 22 counts that included cyberstalking, extortion by use of interstate communications, and unlawful use of means of identification. He will face later sentencing but could face up to 50 years in prison depending on how the judge issues his jail time.

Uwadiae convinced at least 8 men in different states to willfully send over nude and explicit pictures and videos. He then threatened to release those assets to his victim's friend, family, and work base. He demanded money and sex in order to keep the pics and videos private. One of his victims, local CBS affiliate WBNS reported, was outed by Uwadiae after he refused to pay $200 or engage in sex. Uwadiae created fake social media profiles and posted the pics with the caption: “This guy is gay, see pics for evidence.” In other cases, he posted pics to a blog for gay men called Male General.

Can you imagine being outed in such a vile way? It just makes you stop and think with what ease we send our location and private photos and how we are potentially exposing ourselves to danger. You don't really know if the person on the other side of Grindr is legit or what their intentions are. Grindr providing a verification system on the app probably wouldn't help because how much info are we willing to give an app that has been accused of sharing?  We all hate to be catfished or have a guy lie about his size, but this kind of crime is just unfathomable.

Do you have any Grindr horror stories?
