Joker: Folie à Deux Trailer Drops

Ok, emo gays, this news piece is for you. After much anticipation, the trailer for Joker: Folie à Deux aka Joker 2 finally dropped and it's pretty gorgeous, dark, and gay. Even if you weren't a fan of the Joaquin Phoenix-led take of the Joker story, it would be a hate crime to pretend that you weren't a little titillated to hear that Lady Gaga would be joining the sequel as Harley Quinn...and that it would be a musical. Even though the trailer just hit last night, it already has over 7.4 million views.

This will be a full-fledged musical with 15 songs, a jukebox musical of sorts with all the music being covers. We get to hear "What the World Needs Now Is Love" in the trailer, and The Guardian has reported that the film will also include the Judy Garland hit, "That’s Entertainment." From the looks of the trailer, the film will explore the musical components much like the film Chicago did, where the numbers happen in the "minds" of the characters and not much in reality.

The trailer picks up where the original left off, our Joker/Arthur Fleck is in Arkham Asylum, looking rather gaunt - makeup or Ozempic? While staggering through the halls of the mental institution, he happens to lock eyes with a rather disheveled Gaga. The film description describes Gaga as Dr. Harleen Quinzel, Arthur's psychiatrist. The two fall madly in love, looking pretty psychotic in the process, and she becomes his willing accomplice. The film seems to, pardon the pun, dance between reality and surrealism, the effect looking like effective, dizzying art. Let's just hope the whole affair isn't too self-indulgent and overblown. Lady Gaga was a bit ridiculous in her celebration of her character Patrizia Reggiani in House of Gucci. Remember the awkward interviews she gave about her amazing acting technique? We also know that Joaquin Phoenix can get into his head and be a bit too much. BUT, there is no denying they are extremely talented, and director Todd Phillips did a great job with the first, so he can probably keep it all together.

With a bigger budget than the original (at a whopping $200 million compared to the original $65 million budget), Joker: Folie à Deux will hit theaters on October 4th, 2024, five years after the first. There was no plan for any sequels but after the first film was such a big hit, and with Joaquin winning the Academy Award, the creative team agreed that there was more of the story to tell. It's a big movie year for Warner Bros. with Beetlejuice 2 and Furiosa (Mad Max prequel) also hitting the screens that same year. Get your popcorn ready!

Are you excited for Joker: Folie à Deux?
