Gay Man Gets Police Entrapped On Grindr & Jailed in Qatar

Well, we knew that the gays were not welcome in the Middle East and a scary situation happening right now just reminds us. Manuel Guerrero Aviña. a dual Mexican and British citizen was entrapped by a police sting on Grindr in Qatar. He was been jailed and is allegedly having his HIV meds withheld. In order to obtain his release from jail, he was forced to name any men he had contact with during his travel.

Currently, the Muslim-based Qatar can punish gay sex for up to seven years in jail, with the death penalty in place under Sharia law. The death penalty is not currently enforced, but will this go backward too? This police raid on Grindr initiated fake messages in order to entrap gay users.

Manuel moved to Qatar for work seven years ago. His family has accused the police of also framing him for drug possession after they found a gram of a gram of methamphetamine in his apartment. They also maintain that he has been forced to sign documents that he cannot read that are in Arabic and has been denied legal counsel. They allegedly denied him his HIV meds while in jail, and tortured him by withholding food and water and making him witness other torture acts. His brother told Attitude Magazine that Manuel has been released from jail, but is banned from leaving the country. In addition, he is running out of HIV meds with only a few days of doses left.

The Mexican embassy has deferred to the British embassy because of his dual citizenship. Manuel is calling on the British government and citizens to get involved and apply pressure. They claim the UK has the power to get him out. As we all know, any lapse in taking HIV medication can result in resistance to the treatment.

Grindr has sent out notifications to its users, warning them of police stings.
