Pornhub Says Goodbye To Texas

Texas is known for big things, and now they are in the news in a big way! Where do you usually get your free porn? With over with over 5.81 billion site visits per month, it's probably Pornhub. Well, this week Pornhub has taken its toys and gone home...they pulled their site from the state of Texas. So long, pardner! Their action is a direct response to the State's age verification requirement. If you have a Texas IP address, you can kiss Pornhub goodbye.

Pornhub has this statement on their homepage:

“Unfortunately, the Texas law for age verification is ineffective, haphazard, and dangerous. Not only will it not actually protect children, but it will also inevitably reduce content creators’ ability to post and distribute legal adult content and directly impact their ability to share the artistic messages they want to convey with it.”

In addition to Pornhub, other assets under their umbrella are also pulled, including Brazzers, YouPorn and Men.com. Pornhub's parent company, Aylo, is currently working with their legal team and reviewing their options. They have also pulled out of Montana, North Carolina, Louisiana, Utah, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Virginia for the same age verification restrictions.

Texas is suing Aylo to the tune of up to $1.6 million for violating the law that went into effect last year. The law allows for fines of up to $10,000 per day of violation. The law is meant to prevent minors from accessing adult material, Pornhub says the law puts minors and privacy at risk by making users upload a government ID to access sites.

The law was temporarily blocked by a US district judge who found the law was too and violated the First Amendment. Judge David Alan Ezra stated:

“It runs the risk that the state can monitor when an adult views sexually explicit materials and what kind of websites they visit. Given Texas’s ongoing criminalization of homosexual intercourse, it is apparent that people who wish to view homosexual material will be profoundly chilled from doing so if they must first affirmatively identify themselves to the state.”

Texas officials filed an emergency appeal and the block was overruled by the US 5th Circuit Court of Appeals.

Some of the community has clapped back at lawmakers, saying that if they really wanted to protect children, they'd do something about gun control and school shootings.

Already, there have been spikes in searches in Texas for virtual private networking (VPN), with users trying to find a way around blocked sites. Such spikes have also been reported in other states where adult sites are blocked.

Who knows how this will develop in the courts, it will be a long road for sure.
