The Grammys: The Good, The Bad, And the Shady

The 66^th Annual Grammys were held last night in a super rainy Los Angeles, but even the rain couldn’t keep out a bevy of interesting moments – good and bad – at the ceremony. Hosted by one of our crushes, the adorable Trevor Noah (have you seen his booty?), it featured a myriad of musical A-listers, from past and present, and wasn’t without some moments that went viral. Here’s our take on last night’s notable happenings.

Swifties rejoiced as Taylor Swift set a record with most Album of the Year wins for her latest, “Midnight.” She was previously tied with Frank Sinatra, Paul Simon, and Stevie Wonder for number of wins. She took the opportunity to announce that her next album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” will be released on April 19. In a surprise moment, the legendary Celine Dion came out to present the award. In a moment of what was considered shade, Taylor Swift was so into her win that she didn’t even acknowledge Celine’s presence as she grabbed the award to take the stage. Social media is divided…shade or just an oversight? The two did press after the win and were seen hugging, so it couldn’t have been all that bad.

Social media was quick to meme the moment. Incidentally, Swift gained 370,000 after last night’s broadcast. Like she needs more attention. LOL.

Miley Cyrus won her first Grammy Award for a total of two. She performed her hit “Flowers” wearing Bob Mackie….yassss, queen….although we aren’t sold on her new hairdo sponsored by Aquanet. Meryl Streep presented her one of the Awards and danced her way back into the audience. We stan Meryl, obvs. Miley also went on to thank her main gays. Fans were quick to notice that she didn’t thank her dad at all. Hmmmm….

Miley’s mom talked to GLAAD and said that one of Miley’s favorite moments was performing at Nashville Pride.

Rapper Killer Mike won three Grammys…then was quickly handcuffed and taken away by authorities for an investigation into a physical altercation. What a way to celebrate. Wonder if they put his Grammys in the evidence closet.

The Grammys added peace to their message by presenting a string quartet made up of musicians of Palestinian, Israeli, and Arab descent, with Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. stating, “As individuals, they sound really good, but together they achieve something beautiful they could never do apart.”

Joni Mitchell got a standing ovation for her rendition of her classic “Both Sides Now.” It was a very intimate moment that pivoted the whole ceremony. It was her first Grammy performance. She also won for Best Folk Album.

Billie Eilish also presented a moment of beauty and solitude with her live performance of “What Was I Made For” from the Barbie soundtrack. Upon leaving the stage, she immediately took off her heels.

Was Jay-Z throwing shade? Upon accepting the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award, he took the moment to criticize the Grammys for never awarding Beyonce the Album of the Year Award. “Obviously, it’s subjective because, you know, it’s music and it’s opinion-based. But you know, some things, you know, I don’t want to embarrass this young lady (Beyonce), but she has more Grammys than everyone and never won album of the year. So even by your own metrics, that doesn’t work. Think about that. The most Grammys; never won album of the year. It doesn’t work.” Yikes.

Fantasia Barrino rocked the house down with her Tina Tribute, performing “Proud Mary.” Annie Lennox also paid tribute to Sinead O’Connor and Steve Wonder paid tribute to Tony Bennett among those we lost this last year.

After KILLING her performance, SZA won the Best R&B Song Award for “Snooze.”

After years and years, from 2007 to be exact, Billy Joel performed new music with “Turn the Lights Back On.” The audience went crazy with a standing ovation.

Country music performing duo Brothers Osborne talked to GLAAD and talked about the increase in LGBTQ audiences and acceptance within the country music industry. T.J. Osborne came out in 2021, becoming the first openly gay artist signed to a major country music label.
