Gay Pop Culture News

The new year means major shakeups on Broadway. Big hits like Some Like It Hot and Kimberly Akimbo are closing to make way for an exciting new crop of shows coming into New York City in the spring of 2024 (known to true Bway aficionados as awards season!). Yes, Broadway likes to put out its best in the spring to dangle as awards bait, and we're hooked. Scroll on for five Broadway shows you want to snag your ticket to ASAP.

Cabaret

London's biggest hit comes to Broadway. (FINALLY!) The acclaimed, award-winning production of Cabaret that completely immerses the audience in the world of the seedy and fabulous Kit Kat Klub from the minute they walk in until the minute they leave will rock Broadway this spring. Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne and Gayle Rankin star as the Emcee and Sally Bowles with Tony winner Bebe Neuwirth joining them as Fraulein Schneider. One of the most expensive revivals in Broadway history, performances begin at the August Wilson Theatre on April 21, 2024.

Lempicka

An original musical that everyone is talking about this season is also a very Queer one. Based on the true story of artist Tamara de Lempicka, the Polish painter from the 1930s known for her Art Deco portraits and real-life lesbian love affairs. The new musical stars Wicked alumni Eden Espinosa in the title role and features an incredible score gays will be singing for years to come at their local piano bars and karaoke nights. This exciting new piece of art is unveiled at Broadway's Longacre Theatre beginning April 14, 2024.

The Wiz

Everybody rejoice! The Wiz, the Tony Award-winning musical adaptation of The Wizard of Oz, is back on Broadway for the first time in decades! This all-Black retelling of L. Frank Baum's famed and beloved Oz story is all-new for a new generation with an updated book by comedian Amber Ruffin but all the music you know and love. Newcomer Nichelle Lewis makes her Broadway debut as Dorothy. Ease on down the road to Marquis Theatre in Times Square beginning April 17, 2024.

The Who's Tommy

Another revival making Broadway nerds super happy this season is the first-ever revival of The Who'sTommy. The rock opera from The Who about a deaf, dumb, and blind prodigy is a huge fan favorite thanks to its incredible score featuring "Pinball Wizard," "Acid Queen," and "See Me, Feel Me." The show hasn't been seen on Broadway since it premiered in the mid-'90s so people are thrilled to experience it again. Ali Louis Bourzgui makes his Broadway debut as the pinball wizard beginning March 28, 2024 at the Nederlander Theatre.

Sunset Boulevard

Gays are so excited to see former Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger as Norma Desmond in director Jamie Lloyd’s wild and contemporary reimagining of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical that they are flying to London to see her sold-out performance. But little did they know, she and the show are coming to Broadway this fall. Based on the iconic 1950 film of the same name, Sunset Boulevard tells the story of an aging movie star and her young lover. The show is said to begin performances at the St. James Theatre in the fall of 2024.
