Nicholas Galitzine Is The King’s Boy Toy In a New Historical Miniseries

There's a new historical costume drama coming to our TV in 2024 and this one is gay as fuck! Mary & George tells the story of a scheming British mother who pawned her beautiful son off as the plaything to the King of England. Think Kris Jenner for the Jacobean Era. And the craziest part is that it's all a true story!

Based on Benjamin Woolley's book The King's Assassin: The Fatal Affair of George Villiers and James I, the miniseries Mary & George tells the story of King James 1 of England and his relationship with his young lover George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham. Villers is played by the gorgeous Nicholas Galitzine, who gay movie fans loved as Prince Henry in Red, White, and Royal Blue. And his scheming, Machiavellian mother Villiers, Countess of Buckingham, is played by Oscar winner Julianne Moore, with the gay king played by Tony Curran.

For all you history nerds thinking, "did this really go down like this?" The long and the short of it is yes. King James I ruled England from 1566 - 1625. And though he was married to Queen Anne of Denmark, it was common knowledge at that time that King James enjoyed his private relationships with male favorites from court. His gifting of boy toys with titles and lands was said to upset many of the ruling class. Of course, his most notable favorite was George Villiers, who he first made an Earl and later the Duke of Buckingham, despite his common birth. Imagine? Nice work if you can get it.

Adapted by DC Moore (of Killing Eve fame), Mary & George will air over seven episodes on British TV on Sky Atlantic in the UK and Starz in the US in 2024, though no release date has been announced. According to the show's website, Mary & George, "is inspired by the unbelievable true story of Mary Villiers, who molded her beautiful and charismatic son, George, to seduce King James VI of Scotland and I of England and become his all-powerful lover. Through outrageous scheming, the pair rose from humble beginnings to become the richest, most titled and influential players the English court had ever seen, and the King’s most trusted advisors. And with England’s place on the world stage under threat from a Spanish invasion and rioters taking to the streets to denounce the King, the stakes could not have been higher. Mary & George is a dangerously daring historical psychodrama about an outrageous mother and son who schemed, seduced, and killed to conquer the court of England and the bed of King James."
