Our Favorite Pop Culture Stoners to Celebrate 420

There are all sorts of versions as to the history of "4/20." The first version I heard was that 420 used to be the police code for weed busts, but others will claim there are 420 chemical compounds in cannabis, or that it's because 42 is "the answer to the Universe" in A Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. But after sifting through the legends and lore, the most likey origin story seems to trace back to a Marin County, California HS in 1971. Five friends at San Rafael HS would meet under a statue of Louis Pasteur at 4:20pm to smoke weed, and thus the seed of a revolution had been planted under the dankest of scientists. To celebrate, here's a look at some of our favorite celeb stoners.

Matthew McConaughey

It should come as no surprise that Matthew McConaughey was once busted for suspicion of possession of weed, possession of drug paraphernalia, and resisting transportation in 1999 after cops were called to his home because of complaints that there was a man dancing naked while playing the bongos. The Magic Mike actor made his breakout in Hollywood by playing stoner David Wooderson and has stayed high on our list of sexiest celebs out there.

I am unapologetically a Pete Davidson stan. I think he seems charming as hell, self-aware, is reported to be a genuinely nice person, and oh also, he reportedly has a 9" blunt of his own. But today I celebrate this Ink Twink's life as a lover of the greenery. Davidson has spoken frequently about his love of weed and how helpful it has been to his mental health over the years.

Snoop Dogg

One of the most famous stoners of all time, Snoop Dogg is also one of my secret crushes. He's really just an aging twink when you think about it, and imho he's aging so damn well. Is it the weed that keeps him looking so fresh? Who knows, but I know that one day I would love to get high with Snoop.

I didn't used to find Seth Rogen specifically sexy. Cute enough, for sure, but I wouldn't actively have called him sexy. Well, he's aging into one sexy elder stoner, and there are few celebrities out there who are more passionate about the cannabis industry. Rogen even owns his own brand of weed/weed products called Houseplant.

Do you love RuPaul's Drag Race? Do you love Alaska Thunderfuck 5000 as much as I do? Well for those who have wondered where Alaska got her amazing name, she quite literally named her drag persona after a famous strain of weed. In her interview with High Times Magazine, Alaska said, "So, my friends were talking about strains they had tried in Amsterdam, and one of them was like, 'Oh you have to try Alaskan Thunderfuck.' I just liked the sound of it. I was like, 'What did you just say?' Those words next to each other are so weird to me and I was like, 'That’s going to be my drag name.' I had never done drag before, but I said, 'That’s going to be my drag name.'" Alaska unofficially shortened her name to Alaska5000 to keep things PG for the show and IG, but I'll always know her as Alaska Thunderfuck 5000

Rihanna

Queen of our hearts, and winner of this year's Super Bowl, Rihanna has long been a supporter of the herbals. She once rolled a blunt on her bodyguard’s head at Coachella and when asked about her relationship to cannabis, RiRi quoted Drake saying, “Kush rolled, glass full … I prefer the better things.”
