New Music! What to Listen to This Week

MUSIC

New Music Column Graphic.

Welcome back, yall. Hope you had a fantastic new tune-filled week because this girl did. As we gear up for another jam-filled weekend, let's look back at the latest albums and singles running it!

For his self-titled sophomore album, Masego, Masego further cemented his status as a pioneer of trap jazz. He knows his sound and capitalizes on it. Where his debut was a love letter to Black women, he focused on making a name for himself, finding his place in the jungle of Hollywood while nursing a broken heart or maybe a hurt ego brought on by rejection.

Key tracks:

"Down in the Dumps", a somber crooner about being a simp over a girl who doesn't really want him but still gives him enough attention to make him float.

We have been teasing the release since "I Wish You Roses" made it on the new music playlist a few weeks ago and "Moonlight" shortly after, and lemme tell you… MISS UCHIS dragged her puss all over this album. Red Moon In Venus starts with "in my Garden…" with Kali letting the song's subject, maybe even her fans, know she loves us. This sets the tone of the project: To love something / one endlessly, despite their flaws, through heartache, even heartbreak. The album, in its entirety, is an effervescent dream to listen to; Kali makes a captivating project filled with love and femininity.

Key Tracks (not sure how I can narrow it down):

"All Mine", a ballad with bite letting her partner know that regardless of any downs, make sure people know you are all mine.

"Deserve Me" (!!!): Run this one back for me! First, featuring the impeccable Summer Walker. Second, there is the line, "Do you know how many motherf*ckers want this pussy exclusively," third, the two complement each other so well. Fourth, the subject matter, YOU DON'T DESERVE ME! You've been treating me a little less than, and that is not it, booski! So imma hit the door. Kiss kiss!

The singles of the week:

"Red Ruby The Sleeze" x Nicki Minaj: "Ni-hao, who the fuck told b*tches, they were me now." To be a Nicki Minaj fan, you must truly listen, not once, maybe not even three times, but multiple times to catch all the subs, disses, innuendos, and double entendre, detect the flow switches. Insanity. When Nicki does her big one, she does it big.

"Heaven Remix" Shygirl x Tinashe:

Shygirl plans to release a deluxe version of her impeccable project Nymph. The first drop is a favorite track of mine featuring a QUEEN. Tinashe adds another level of dreamy excellence to an already audibly euphoric tune.

"Since I have a Lover" x 6LACK:

Gearing up with his third full-length release, 6lack is deep in his bag, appreciating a new love and ensuring he does not F it up!

“Impurities” x Arlo Parks:

With their second song in 3 months, Arlo "radiates like a star" next to a new love that accepts her "flaws and all." More unconditional and communicative love in 2023!!

"Dusties" x Maiya The Don: After fans got a few tweets off about Maiya being inconsistent, she hopped on Twitter to let them know what she's been doing, which was to be featured on two songs and pop out on Flo Milli's tour. So to quiet those talking crazy, she dropped "Dusties", Inteloping "It Be's That Way Sometimes" by Joe Simon & "Munch" by Ice Spice, letting us know what she won't tolerate and if she tolerates you… "then you luckyyyy."

“Worms” x Ashnikko:

If I could sum up the throughline of this song, it would be the meme of the dog at work trying to remain calm while everything around them is on fire. I can relate. This ish is so damn catchy.

“Peaches & Eggplants” x Young Nudy feat 21 Savage:

I know I have said it before, but I am not a fan of "new male rappers" fan, but the playful, non-serious musicality and the way this song takes me out of my character makes me want to bump the whole project.

"Still Alive" x Demi Lovato:

Give Demi all the rock songs. ALL the rock songs. The track from the original film Scream VI coming out today.

"Dummy" x Portugal. The Man:

After listening to this, which gives me higher quality, hit the ground running "Pumped Up Kicks," I did a deeper dive and realized I like more Portugal the Man songs than I thought.

Today, Miley Cyrus returns with a special on Disney+ & her new album Endless Summer Vacation.

Adanna Duru releases her debut ep Nappy Hour.

And I am sure there is more that I will be spinning! Stay tuned and stay plugged in!
