Happy Fetish month, my saucy little deviants. In honor of this most sacred of times, I'd like to raise a glass to the crazy sexy talented Alex Mecum. Alex, for those of us that have yet to have heard of "sounding," can you dish a little?

Sounding is inserting objects into your urethra, starting at the head of your penis and putting it further down. People use different types of objects. Common ones would be metal rods, silicon sounds...some people put their pinkies in there! But, anyways, that's sounding.

Where does the term "sounding" come from? 

Sounding has nothing to do with audible sound. It actually comes from the practice of measuring the depths of water on earth. The word "sounding" is Old English in etymological origin. So I'm guessing when you are sticking a sounding rod in you, in a way you are measuring the "depths of your urethra" in the same manner that people do the depths of water.

How did you first get interested in sounding?

It was kind of accidental, actually, and in a very unsafe way, honestly. So, I was on my Mormon mission, sexually starved obviously, because that's sort of a taboo thing, where they like to pretend we are not sexual beings... Anyway, super sex-starved, super horny, and so I took a camera to record myself, I took a Bic pen, covered it with lotion, and shoved it up my dick. I recorded that and just thought it was hot watching it come out slowly.

So that was my first experience, and I would advise anyone to not do it that way because, you know, I could have gotten a urinary tract infection. It was kind of a dangerous thing to do.

So you grew up Mormon?

Well, that might be a whole other conversation about a completely other fetish, hahaha! Like, I've donated so many clothing items to porn studios to make Mormon porn. That's like a whole fetish all in itself!

Do you think that your Mormon upbringing has made you keener on kink?

I think so. I feel like, since sexual expression was so repressed in our community—as some people may know, Mormons believe in sexual sin being second only to murder in the severity of sins—so you learn to suppress things early on in life and you don't let those things come to light.  And so a lot of us, I think, when we go through our sexual exploration, we explode out and want to try everything.

I would attribute that to probably how I started doing porn. It was an act of, well, wanting to find the truth about sexuality, but second, to confront the norms of the sexual culture in the Mormon community. It was a rebellion of sorts, I'd say.

Between being sounded and sounding yourself, what's your take? Is one safer than the other? More pleasurable than the other? 

I've mostly just sounded myself. I have done a couple of scenes that include others sounding me, but it isn't all that common. Honestly, I've also struggled to find people that are into that. I feel like a lot of the times that you talk to people, sounding doesn't often come up. That being said, I wouldn't mind trying it more with other people.

Back to your question, I know what feels good to me, I know what I like, and I can read my own body, so I would say that for right now, it is more pleasurable for me to do it. But, I am completely open to group-sounding sessions and exploring more of that with other people.

Do you think that, when being sounded by others, the component of trust adds, detracts, or even distracts from the experience?

I feel like in a lot of fetish types of sexual practices it takes a large amount of trust between two people. You need to be able to read each other's bodies. I've never sounded someone else, but I have fisted someone... a couple of people, actually... and I feel like I needed to be able to read the person I was fisting in some way. It became an extremely intimate experience because of the amount of trust it takes to be able to take someone's whole fist and arm into them.

I think it's the same way for anyone who's sounding. If you are able to read your partner's body, if you're doing that to someone else, then it can be a pretty intimate experience.

What would be your most basic advice to someone who is a virgin to sounding?

Try it on yourself. I don't think sounding is the type of thing you want to try on someone else for the first time.  You need to know how it feels on yourself first. If you want to start out, you can go to any sex shop, and I would say to start out with something on the smaller side. Probably something like a 5mm silicon sounds, and of course, sanitize them with rubbing alcohol or alcohol wipes to clean them thoroughly. Don't touch them with your finger, use paper towels, use medical-grade water-based lube and apply it with a paper towel. You can also put some lube on the head of your dick.

Start off soft, you don't have to be hard. Actually, it's a little bit easier because once the glands are swollen, they can constrict the passage there. If you try to force through that it can be quite painful. For some people, including myself, it's getting through that first penetration of the head of your penis that can be the most painful. As a lot of us in fetish circles, we find pleasure in the pain. But for beginners, you want to start with less pain, which is why I say to start off smaller. Don't go for something big or you can tear the lining in your urethra. Don't push yourself.

Do you have any sounding scenes for us to look forward to in the near future?

Well actually, I'm doing a sounding scene for Himeros in a bit. I'll be working with Jordan Starr, and I can't tell you all of the details, but I'm sure it's going to be pretty amazing!
