Groundbreaking Breakthrough for HIV Vaccine!!!

For the last 40 years, scientists and researchers have been working to defeat the disease that has plagued our community for equally as long. It has at times felt like a woefully slow process, hindered by the profitability of sickness. But after countless research studies and an entire generation of people lost to AIDS, to say nothing of the 1 million+ new HIV cases every year, a breakthrough has finally arrived that show promising signs of preventing HIV.

On December 1st, World AIDS Day, Leggat et al. released the findings of their study which they then had published in the iconic academic journal, Science. The results specifically show that a vaccine that primes immunogen development was safe and induced the hoped-for responses in 97% of vaccine recipients at incredibly high frequencies not yet seen in other studies. Immunogens are substances that generate B-cells and/or T-cells to form an adaptive immune responses. In other words: this seems to prevent HIV!

As this is just a Phase 1 study, it still needs to progress into the next phases before it becomes available to the general public, but this is decidedly one of the most exciting scientific breakthroughs in the last half century. Between things like PrEP, regular testing, and scientific breakthroughs like this, I'm more hopeful than ever that I may live to see the day where HIV/AIDS are eradicated.
