Why “Hacks” Should be Every Gay Man’s Favorite Show Right Now

May 12th will mark the premiere of season 2 of one of the best shows currently on television, or at least one of the smartest, funniest, and GAYEST! Yes, we're talking about HBO Max’s Hacks, starring Emmy winner Jean Smart (her role on the '80s classic Designing Women automatically makes her a gay favorite) as Deborah Vance, an aging Las Vegas headliner whose comedy act seems to be getting stale. Enter Ava (Hannah Einbinder), a struggling young writer in desperate need of an assignment. The two women meet and clash and go on some absolutely fabulous (no, not that show) adventures together.

Let’s have a look at what makes Hacks so fabulous and so fabulously gay!

The Bitchy Dialogue

Lines like “Why are you dressed like Rachel Maddow’s mechanic?!” and “So cool you decorated your house like a Cheesecake Factory” make the banter between the two lead actresses irresistible. It's been too long since we've had good bitching like this on a TV show.

The Fabulous Fashion

Costume designer Kathleen Felix-Hager goes all out with sequined pantsuits, flowery kimonos, and gaudy QVC jewelry to make Deborah’s character as over-the-top as we expect her to be, and even more like our dearly departed Joan Rivers (clearly an inspiration for the Deborah character).

The Cute Guys

Newcomer Carl Clemons-Hopkins plays Deborah’s gay and quite dreamy assistant, who often helps the ladies out of trouble and still manages to have a fling with a cute water inspector. We want to be him and be with him at the same time!

Paul W. Downs (who is also co-creator and producer of the series!) plays the agent of both Deborah and Ava. He brings the two unwilling ladies together against their wishes and continues to pin one against the other. If it weren’t for those dreamy blue eyes, he’d be pretty hard to like. Remember when he stripped down in Broad City?

Christopher McDonald plays the crooked owner of the Casino where Deborah plays, who threatens to take away her primetime spot. He’s also her sometime lover.
