1. Pup Name

Choose one unique to you that celebrates your pup identity. If you’re ahead of the curve with a Handler, he, she, they/them should choose the name that fits you.

2. Pup Toys/Treats

Every pup has a favorite toy they like to play with and treat they enjoy eating. Choose something unique to you that comforts you or makes you happy, i.e. favorite stuffed toy, favorite candy, or snack treat that’s portable. Think outside the box, but remember you are in the pup headspace, not a human one.

3. Pup Community

Find yourself a community of other pups, whether it be online or in person. This will help you build your confidence and maybe eventually find a Pack or a Pup Handler of your own. Should you find a Handler, let him, her, they/them decide when you’re ready for a collar and maybe even a lock, once you’ve achieved that level of trust and respect.

4. Pup Gear

Invest in certain elements such as a collar with a tag and your pup name (one that can be worn daily or one that can be removed at your leisure depending on your social or work climate). Start deciding on leather gear or other pup-related gear you may be interested in wearing (Mr. S Leather in San Francisco is an excellent source to get you started).

5. Pup Hood / Mask

Last, but far from least, you truly can’t get into the headspace until you’re fully committed to the purchase of one. Sometimes a hood will be gifted to you by a Pup Handler once earned, or you can purchase your own.
