Hugh Grant has been making his way around the PR circuit lately to promote his new miniseries, A Very English Scandal. The show tells the true story of former British Parliament member Jeremy Thorpe and the same-sex love affair - with a much younger man - that shook the U.K. in the 70s.
While sitting down with Stephen Colbert to discuss his experiences on the show, Grant shared a small bit of information that would make even the bravest of us very uncomfortable. He revealed that he watched his gay sex scene with none other than his 89-year-old dad, Captain James Grant.
He's kidding, right?
"There are scenes with me entering the room — famously this all happened — with a jar of Vaseline and a towel," Grant said, describing the true nature of the scene. "And one thing leads to another and it’s all there."
"I did have to watch it with my 89-year-old ex-military father. I go around on Sunday night, and he said to me, 'Now, you’re in this bugger’s film.' And I said, 'Yes, that’s right.' He said, 'Well, let’s watch it.' And I said, 'No Dad, you’re not going to like this.' And he said, 'No no no, I’m a very supportive father. I want to watch it. I’ve got a television set upstairs. If you show me how to work it, we’ll watch it together.'"
And that's how Hugh Grant ended up living out a fear any sane person would have - watching a sex scene with their parent. Personally, I feel this story would not have been as good without the mention of the Vaseline.
