Bottom Of The Box Porn: “Deviants!”

I think I should start this review by clearing up a point or two about this film's name. In the vast vanilla wasteland of mind-numbingly dull bottom-of-the-box porn in which I live, a title like "Deviants!" seems to hold the promise of something a little different. Something a little edgy. Maybe even a little bit of that something the French like to call "I don't know what." I mean, the package says in big bold letters, "Debauched! Depraved! Degraded!" And when you've spent as many afternoons as I have sorting through an eight-foot mountain of DVDs with such profoundly uninspiring titles as "Barely Legal Twinks Groom Each Other's Fauxhawks" and "Insurance Claims Adjusters In Assless Chaps Listlessly Fuck At The Hyatt Regency #17", stumbling across a little real deviance now and then is the sort of pleasant surprise that can make one's whole day.

Even so, in hindsight I'm honestly not sure whether to be more disappointed or relieved that "Deviants!" didn't quite live up to its provocative, exclamation-pointed nom-du-porn. After all, deviance is in the eye of the beholder, and although I was hoping for something a little bit kinkier, it could have just as easily turned out to be something completely foul and stomach-churning, like Shetland ponies with mousetraps on their scrotums pooping on caged octogenarian she-male amputees in Girl Scout uniforms. Or "Dreamgirls."

What "Deviants!" actually did turn out to be, though, was some damn fine, straightforward porn about a bunch of guys who work for a dirty magazine and fuck a lot on their coffee breaks. Not exactly a ground-breaking premise, true, but execution is everything here. We get just enough setup before every scene to know who each of the players are: the grungy art-school dropout photographer, his eager-to-please (if you know what I mean) young assistant, the skinhead thug who's just there to pick up his slutty girlfriend from a lesbian porno shoot, the pair of bored and bi-curious dudes who work in the stockroom, the gruff but gentle (but possibly borderline-sociopath?) building maintenance guy. One by one, we are introduced to the characters, and then we get to watch them violate one another in various and sundry combinations. Simple, but in this case, more than effective.

The men are rough around the edges and masculine without being booted, harnessed, cigar-smoking caricatures. The pacing didn't have me reaching for the fast-forward button every thirty seconds. Perhaps most importantly, the soundtrack eschews the traditional monotonous synth-muzak for the actual noises made by the deviant cast. In fact, the sound guy on this movie seriously deserves some kind of porn sound Oscar for so accurately capturing and reproducing every bit of slurping, sloshing, spitting and dirty-talking. I felt like I was right there on the floor of the men's room.

Bottom line: unless you don't really watch a whole lot of porn (and you're visiting this website why, now?), "Deviants!" probably isn't going to show you anything you haven't seen before, but it is pretty well packed with way-above-average quality masturbation material. And that's something even us pros don't get to see nearly as often as we'd like.
