This Is What the Future of Gay Porn Looks Like

Today video-on-demand service Naked Sword released the first episode of their "Golden Gate" series. The scene is very hot, and we should be grateful, because, in the near future, this is how all porn will get made.

"Golden Gate" is a five-part series of loosely connected vignettes about the sex lives of gay men in San Francisco. Just like a TV show you can beat off to, a new scene will be available each week. The first installment (trailer below) features Cameron Marshall playing a Silicon Valley CEO who uses his considerable wealth to hire "So You Think You Can Fuck" winner Topher Dimaggio, a first-time hustler. After finding his ad on Rentboy.com, Marshall invites Dimaggio over to fuck him for the first time (ironic considering the two are a couple in real life). The scene is wonderful. There's just enough set-up to keep those who like a narrative interested, but not so much it bogs down the action, which is dick-stiffeningly sexy.

It's not really as exciting as talking about poles in holes, what's really revolutionary about "Golden Gate" is the way that it's made and the way you're going to watch it. Directed by Raging Stallion's award-winning Chris Ward, this is the first project that Naked Sword has produced directly for themselves. This is a reflection of the way that we all buy and consume porn these days. No longer are studio websites and on-demand warehouses featuring reruns of content made for DVDs movies. Now it works the other way around, where more people are consuming their porn online and a shrinking majority are still shelling out for the physical DVDs—which are more and more just a compendium of content that already debuted online.

Though Raging Stallion—which is intertwined with Naked Sword in a number of ways both financially and otherwise—is still rolling out a big-budget movie at the end of this year, the next wave of splashy productions are going to be created for on-demand sites, web-friendly studios like Bel Ami, and formerly-known-as-amateur websites like Randy Blue( whose sophistication at creating and packaging themed content grows each year). There won't be any more "movies" in the traditional sense, just collections of scenes. "Golden Gate" is the ideal precursor to that pay-as-you-go market, especially because it's maintaining a high standard of production and giving us the added luxury of a little bit of a plot.

We've waxed rhapsodic about Jet Set's 2005 series "Wet Palms" in the past and it's no wonder that "Golden Gate" shares its screenwriters Jack Shamama and Michael Stabile. The saddest thing about campy gay porn soap "Wet Palms" was that it was a concept before its time. Just five years ago people didn't have the savvy (or the high-speed web access) to know what to do with a series that came out every week. The porn-addled masses have evolved so much in such a short time that the internet gay porn series is an idea whose time as come.

Industry heavy-weights Naked Sword—with all their marketing might—and Raging Stallion—with their huge stable of exclusives and movie-making know how—are the ideal people to change people's viewing habits and expectations of porn for better. Now we can't wait to see how everyone else in the industry responds. Personally we think Chi Chi LaRue probably has at least a dozen epic web miniseries in her, and Jet Set could create the funniest porn sitcom you ever want to see (can we call it Two and a Half Men?).

While we miss some of the campy fun of "Wet Palms," we're very glad that "Golden Gate" is as good as it is. After all, this is the future of porn that we're talking about, and we're glad the bar has been set high.
