Fleshbot’s Top Ten Gay DVDs of 2006

While we relied on our heart (and certain other parts) to come up with our top ten crush objects of the year, we used more a rather objective method to determine our list of 2006's best gay porn movies: a formula which involved the number of days each movie remained in or near our DVD players; the number of times people asked to borrow our copy; the number of days (or weeks) it took said people to return it; approximate number of ounces of lube we went through while "reviewing" it; and the inverse coefficient of the number of times the word "hot" was used it its press release. So you see, it's all very scientific.

Big Dick Club
Falcon

While Falcon's 2006 releases generally suffered from too much sameness (who'd have thought we'd actually be missing all those devil horns and angel wings in last year's "Heaven To Hell"?), "Big Dick Club" at least had the virtue of a memorable title and marketing campaign ... not to mention Barrett Long's astounding bionic cumshot, which remains one for the history books.

Lords Of The Jungle
Raging Stallion

Raging Stallion has always been a little more rough around the edges than its glossier porn cousins, so it was surprising to hear that their flagship production for the year was going to be filmed on a lush tropical island instead of some abandoned East Bay pie plate factory—but where certain other studios might have used such a location as an opportunity to create a hardcore take on "Lost" with all the erotic intensity of a Coppertone commercial, director Chris Ward threw in enough curves to keep things interesting between scenes of incredibly scorching alpha male sex under the sun.

Damon and Hunter: Doing It Together
Comstock Films

Though they're no longer a couple, watching Comstock Films' porn verité exploration of the relationship between then-boyfriends Hunter James and Damon DeMarco is more than an exercise in wistful nostalgia: the perfect antidote to the glut of overprocessed smut crowding the porn shelves, the conversational, intimate "Damon and Hunter" is both the kind of film your straight girlfriends will keep trying to steal from you as well as a rare look of what porn stars look like when they're not having sex like porn stars. And any porn DVD that was banned in Australia deserves a space on anyone's Best Of list as far as we're concerned.

Boot Boy
Rascal Video

With his dewy all-American looks, who knew Rascal exclusive Benjamin Bradley could turn in such a credible fetish-flavored performance like this one? We love how Chi Chi LaRue just keeps getting nastier (in a good way) as the years pass, and "Boot Boy" was one of the more pleasant porn surprises of the year: a fetish movie featuring things like boot and armpit licking for people who don't think they like fetish movies.

The Show (Part 1 and 2)
Dark Alley Media

Upstart porn company Dark Alley Media proved it had what it takes to keep up with the big boys during 2006, with a dizzying production schedule and a series of releases featuring some seriously intense sex—and Dark Alley majordomos Owen Hawk and Matthias Von Fistenberg's inspired decision to team up with New York City blatino powerhouse Pitbull Productions for this two-part sexual pageant resulted in an even more intense exploration of their signature brand of hardcore and fetish action.

SoldierBoy
Eurocreme

After spoiling us with a handful of our favorite porn movies of 2005 under the Eurocreme label, we were a little disappointed that director Max Lincoln's output for 2006 was limited to only one DVD. Good thing "Soldier Boy" gave us plenty of what we loved so much about his work in the first place: hot British twinks, great editing, a soundtrack that didn't make you want to rip the speakers out of your TV, and the kind of enthusiastic fucking that could teach a lot of our domestic porn pros a thing or two.

Justice
Hot House Productions

Steven Scarborough is another director who was at the top of his game in 2006, and it was great to see him moving away from the usual brand of muscle stud porn to more down-and-dirty stuff over the course of the year. While we loved all that Spandex-tinged action in "Trunks 2", Hot House's flagship production "Justice" approached true porn epic proportions without becoming overblown or tedious: sixteen models, seven scenes, and a beleagured Shane Rollins in one of the best star turns of his career.

Big Rig
Buckshot /COLT Studio Group

Part road movie, part trucker fantasy, part eighteen-wheeled vehicle for all-time Fleshbot dream daddy Gus Mattox before his untimely retirement from the porn scene, the gorgeously photographed "Big Rig" might have been less succesful had it not been Mattox' movie from start to finish: he absolutely steals every scene he's in, and fortunately he happens to be in most of them. You can't ask for a better swan song than that.

La Dolce Vita

Between its massive prerelease hype and Michael Lucas' less-than-cuddly reputation among certain circles of porn cognoscenti (though take it from us—he's really a big ol' pussycat), there were some folks who'd have liked "La Dolce Vita" to fall flat on its Fellini-inspired face. Looks like the naysayers are going to have to wait a while longer: as we said in our review last week, in its ambition and polish it ends up being a classic of its kind. (Rumors that Lucas' next megaproduction would be a 27-part porn adaptation of "Anna Karenina" were unconfirmed at press time.)

Arcade On Route 9
Titan Media

There isn't much we can say about Joe Gage's masterpiece that we didn't say already in our (admittedly gushing, and we choose that word carefully) review. But in case we didn't make it clear enough, one reason why "Arcade On Route 9" tops our list this year is because it's that rare porn movie that offers something for everyone: whether you're into flip flopping muscle hunks, intergenerational pairings, college dudes, or deliciously drawn-out sequences that elevate watersports to an art form, you'll find it here. And because Joe Gage is a master at depicting porn archetypes—the horny coach, the wide-eyed hitchiker, the randy delivery man—even though you may think you've seen it all before, this movie will convince you they're all worth watching again. And again.
